SOUTHEASTERN'S ENROLLMENT UP THIS FALL
     HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's enrollment, which set a milestone
of over 15,000 students last fall, increased again with an official headcount of 15,334.
     The University's official enrollment profile released today (Sept. 14) shows that St.
Tammany Parish continues to be home base for the largest number of Southeastern students.
     This fall, 2,707 undergraduates and 383 graduate students live in St. Tammany, while
2,717 undergraduates and 360 graduate students come from Tangipahoa Parish.  East Baton
Rouge Parish (2,565 students), Livingston Parish (1,669 students), Jefferson Parish (1,180
students) and Washington Parish (664 students) round out Southeastern s geographic  top six 
list. 
     "We are delighted to announce a slight increase in enrollment for the Fall," Southeastern
President Sally Clausen said. "Southeastern continues to be the top choice of students in the
surrounding area because of our quality programs and our caring environment." 
     The profile also shows that the largest increase is in the number of minority students, an
increase of 18 percent over last fall s enrollment. Minority students include African-American,
Hispanic, Asian-American and American Indian students. 
     Broken down by classification, fall 1998 enrollment includes 5,419 freshmen, 2,727
sophomores, 2,051 juniors and 3,396 seniors. Also, 1,741 students are enrolled in Southeastern
graduate programs, which are all nationally accredited where accreditation is available.
Specifically, the profile shows an increase in sophomores, seniors and graduate students with
freshmen at a stand still.
     Student enrollment by academic area is as follows: College of Arts and Sciences, 2,706
students; College of Basic Studies, 7,283 students; College of Business, 1,506 students; College
of Education, 2,812 students and School of Nursing, 788 students.
