EXCELLENCE IN HEALTH & EDUCATION SUMMER INSTITUTE AUGUST 3-7
HAMMOND, LA -- The Excellence in Health and Education Project (EHEP) at
Southeastern Louisiana University is hosting a Summer Institute in health education curricula
and
school health to assist those who teach health education and professionals who work with youth.
The Institute, which will be held August 3-7 on the Southeastern campus, offers six areas
of training aimed at different grade levels from kindergarten through high school, and addresses
such topics as stress management, goal setting, health communication, and includes teaching
strategies.
"This program is not just for classroom teachers," said Millie Naquin, Southeastern
Kinesiology professor and associate director of training. "It's for all sorts of people who work
with
youth, even those outside of the schools who work with young people in non-typical settings."
Naquin says the main goal of EHEP is to improve the health of children and youth and the
health of schools in general.
Some of the training programs for the conference include the "Michigan Model", an
integrative comprehensive health curriculum for grades K-8, "Teenage Health Teaching
Modules," developed by the Education Development Center in Massachusetts with assistance
from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), "Be Proud, Be Responsible," an interactive HIV
curriculum for in- or after-school programming, that is recommended by the CDC, "Get Real
About Aids," for grades 9-12, also recommended by the CDC, "Basic Health Needs for
Adolescents" and "Personal and Social Skills" for grades 9-12.
Participants may register for three hours of graduate credit and approved continuing
education credits. Campus housing is available and optional nighttime seminars on Internet and
PowerPoint presentations will be available at no additional charge.
The EHEP Summer Institute is sponsored by the Louisiana Department of Education and
Office of Public Health, Orleans Public Schools and Southeastern Louisiana University.
