SLU SETS ANOTHER RECORD--SUMMER ENROLLMENT OVER 6,000
HAMMOND Once again students are flocking to Southeastern Louisiana University
and summer 1998 is no exception. More than 6,000 students are enrolled in summer classes
representing the largest number of students ever enrolled in summer school at Southeastern.
According to the University s official enrollment profile, the summer head count of
6,076 is up 5.5 percent from 5,760 students in Summer 1997. Enrollment is up in
Tangipahoa Parish, which has 1,185 students, as well as in the parishes of St. Tammany, 975;
Jefferson, 292; and Washington, 216.
Registrar Stephen Soutullo said that Southeastern offers students a variety of options
for completing summer coursework. In addition to the traditional eight-week summer class
schedule, students can take accelerated four-week term classes or can complete a course in
two weeks of interim classes, offered between the spring and summer sessions.
This shows that while enrollment continues to increase our departments are offering
more opportunities for students to take classes that meet their educational needs, Soutullo
said.
Senior Celeste Blanchard, a Napoleonville nursing major, said that Southeastern
students are attending summer school for a number of reasons. Personally, I am taking
summer classes to speed up my graduation date, Blanchard said. And, the quality of the
School of Nursing program here at Southeastern is second to none.
Accounting freshman Angela Sanders, the 1998 valedictorian for Holden High School,
said that she is attending summer school to get a head start on basic courses. It is more of
an advantage to me to come to summer school to begin working on my freshman-level
classes, Sanders said. And, I came to Southeastern because the accounting department is the
best in the state.
President Sally Clausen is pleased and excited about the summer enrollment increase.
She said that Southeastern works hard to provide the students with the best possible
environment.
We want to let our students know that we care about them and their future
employment, Clausen said.
Southeastern Louisiana University is a student-centered university offering summer
classes from 7:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. to meet the needs of traditional and non-traditional
students.
