SLU REDUCING ENERGY SURCHARGE FROM $30 TO $12
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University is reducing the energy surcharge
assessed to full time students from $30 per semester to $12.
The surcharge was approved for all universities last July by the Louisiana Board of
Regents when utility costs increased nearly $30 million for all state colleges and universities. It
was added to student fees in the fall 2001 semester.
Stephen Smith, Southeastern vice president for administration and finance, said
aggressive campus energy conservation measures, lower energy bills, unanticipated credits from
Entergy and mild early winter temperatures have prompted Southeastern's reduction.
When students return for the spring 2002 semester, they will pay $1 per credit hour up to
12 hours, which is full-time status, Smith said.
Louis Booth, director of the university's Physical Plant, said the university helped cut its
utility bill by keeping a close eye on energy use, especially at night and on weekends.
Maintenance workers and university police checked campus buildings after hours to
ensure that unnecessary lights and equipment were turned off and, when possible, evening
classes were consolidated in central locations, such as the new classroom and laboratory building
on North Oak St.
