SUMMER INSTITUTE SUPPORTS HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT OF YOUTH
     HAMMOND   Southeastern Louisiana University, in conjunction with government and
non-government organizations throughout the state, will host a Excellence in Health and
Education Project summer institute for education professional, July 31 to August 3.
     The Excellence in Health and Education Project brings together school and community
programs supporting healthy development of youth and reducing risk behaviors in the areas of
violence, stress, tobacco, alcohol and other drug use, nutrition, physical activity, sexuality and
HIV/AIDS infection. 
     Included in this year's summer institute program are keynote speakers Diane
Allensworth, branch chief for program development at the Division of Adolescent and School
Health, Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, and Bob McCannon, executive director of the
New Mexico Media Literacy Project, the foremost literacy program in the United States.
     Participants will have the opportunity to attend one of 11 training programs, including
personal and social skills, becoming a responsible teen, media literacy, reducing the risk,
postponing sexual involvement, strengthening families, focus on kids, applied suicide
intervention skills training, American Red Cross CPR instructor's training, nutrition across the
curriculum, and dietary guidelines.
     Teachers, administrators, health educators, school counselors, social workers, food
service personnel, nurses, nurse practitioners, community based workers, pre-service students
and other health and education professionals are invited to attend. Continuing education units
(CEUs) will be offered for health educators, social workers, counselors, and dietitians, as well as
graduate credit hours (through Southeastern). 
     Sessions will be held on the Southeastern campus in Hammond.  Lodging will be
available at Southeastern Oaks and various residence halls.

Summer Institute Supports Healthy Development of Youth   add one
     A limited number of scholarships fully paying registration, lodging, meals and materials
are available through Summer Institute co-sponsors: New Orleans Public Schools, Louisiana
Department of Education, Louisiana Office of Public Health, Southeast Comprehensive
Assistance Center, and the Frost Foundation.
