SPEAKERS ANNOUNCED FOR YOUTH HEALTH SUMMER INSTITUTE

     HAMMOND --  Southeastern Louisiana University's Excellence in Health and
Education Project is hosting Summer Institute II, a four-day program for professionals who
work to improve the health of children and youth.
     Guest speakers for the Summer Institute II are Dr. JoAnne Owens-Nauslar of the
American School Health Association (ASHA), and Amanda Dew Manning, formerly with the
U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
     The Summer Institute II is scheduled for Aug. 3-6 at Southeastern's Cate Teacher
Education Center. It is open to administrators, counselors, social workers, school psychologists,
nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, public health employees, parents and community
members.
     Owens-Nauslar will be the opening speaker for the Institute on Aug. 3. She will discuss
the relationship between health and academics and review strategies to promote coordinated
school health programming. 
     Owens-Nauslar is the director of professional development at ASHA She previously
served as the state director of health and physical education at the Nebraska department of
education. She has been a public school teacher, college professor and school board member. She
is the co-author of the motivational, self-help book, Making Do Out of Doo-Doo: Lessons in Life
for Hardiness, Health and Fitness.  
     A long-distance runner, Owens-Nauslar  serves as the president of the On Deck Circle for
Husker softball, the Cornhusker State Games board of directors and past president of  the
National Association for Sport and Physical Education. 
     She received a bachelor of science degree from Chadron State College (Nebraska), and
master's and doctoral degrees from the University Nebraska-Lincoln.

Youth Health Institute Speakers/ADD ONE

     Amanda Dew Manning will give the closing address on Aug. 6. She is the president of
Amanda Dew Manning & Associates, Inc., a communications and marketing firm specializing in
food, nutrition and health. 
     Manning has served as associate administrator of the Food and Consumer Service (FCS)
for the USDA, planning and developing the $24 million program designed to support USA's
School Meals Initiative for Healthy Children. She also served as assistant director of the Women,
Infants and Children's program (WIC) in FCS' Western Regional Office and has developed and
managed national initiatives in comprehensive school health programs for the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention. 
     The first Nutrition Education and Training program coordinator for the state of
California, Manning developed the nationally-acclaimed K-12 nutrition education curriculum,
Choose Well, Be Well. The comprehensive school health program Healthy Kids, Healthy
California, which she created and marketed, has been modeled throughout the country. 
     The 1997 recipient of the distinguished Career Achievement Award from the Society of
Nutrition Education, Manning has served on the board of directors of the National Food Service
Management Institute. She recently joined the board of directors for the Society for Nutrition
Education and will assume the presidency in 2000.  She is a member of the American School
Food Service Association and is a School Foodservice and Nutrition Specialist with charter
status.  
     Manning received a master's degrees in Health Services Management from Golden Gate
University and in education from Virginia Tech and a bachelor's degree  in Home Economics
from the University of North Carolina.
