SUMMER INSTITUTE
HAMMOND -- The Center for Excellence in Health and Education's Summer Institute
2000 will be held at Southeastern Louisiana University, July 11-14. The institute includes 11
workshops for school teachers, church youth leaders, community activists, and others interested
in promoting wellness among youth.
A twelfth workshop, "Youth Peer Education and Training," is open to teenagers only.
Offered by the Southeast Chapter of the American Red Cross, the workshop will provide factual
HIV information and promote skills for better decision making regarding risky behavior among
teens.
Institute workshops topics are
* Media Literacy -- teaches participants how to conduct workshops or classes to empower
people to recognize and control the influences of media on decisions affecting health.
* Tobacco Cessation -- trains teachers and community activists who work with youth to
motivate students to adopt a healthier, smoke-free lifestyle and techniques to assist youth in
tobacco cessation efforts.
* Life-Skills Training teaches participants to train youth to identify how self-image is
formed, identify myths about substance abuse, and improve communication skills.
* Project TNT (Toward No Tobacco Use) a comprehensive approach toward youth
tobacco-use for 10-15 year olds, which includes techniques appropriate for minority youth and
youth with risk factors that affect tobacco use.
* Be Proud, Be Responsible provides an HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum for high
school students.

EHEP SUMMER INSTITUTE Add One
* Coordinated School Health develops skills to promote the eight components of
successful Coordinated School Health programs.
* Drug-Free Schools and Communities Crisis Response Team training.
* Personal and Social Skills teaches decision making, communication, stress
management and goal setting and can be integrated across all health content areas in grades 9-12.
* Power Moves deals with a situational approach to HIV prevention for high-risk youth.
* Project "Alert" an 11-lesson curriculum for grades 6-8 focusing on tobacco, alcohol
and other drugs. Free training and materials will be offered. Training will be offered for two or
more member school teams representing two grade levels, 6-7 or 7-8.
* Team Nutrition will increase nutrition education by linking the cafeteria and the
classroom. The workshop will include a nutrition curriculum and chef cooking demonstration
and is limited to 20 teams of four participants each.
