HANRAHAN, SEALS NAMED SOUTHEASTERN STUDENTS OF THE YEAR
     HAMMOND -- John Michael Seals of Angie and Kathryn Hanrahan of LaPlace have
been named "Outstanding Man and Woman of the Year" for 2002 by the Southeastern Louisiana
University Division of Student Affairs.
     The awards were presented at the annual Student Affairs honors convocation. The
honorees were selected by a committee of faculty, staff and graduate students from among five
female and four male nominees who have "made outstanding contributions to the university,"
said Brad O'Hara, vice president for student affairs.
     Hanrahan, a junior marketing major, is editor in chief of Southeastern's student
newspaper, "The Lion's Roar," and entertainment director for KSLU 90.9FM, the campus'
public radio station. She is a member of the American Marketing Association, the Broadcast
Society, the Press Club, and Gamma Beta Phi Honor and Service Society, and has a 3.915 grade
point average.                           Hanrahan also received the Student Publications Award.
     Seals, a senior social studies education major, is president of Gamma Beta Phi and vice
president of the state association. He is a member of Theta Chi Fraternity, president of the
College Democrats, Student Government Association cabinet aide coordinator, and a member of
Phi Kappa Phi and the Thirteen Club, Southeastern's honor society. His grade point average is
3.955.
     Seals also was recognized for having the highest grade point average for a member of the
Interfraternity Council, and received a Student Foundation Leadership Award.
     Also at the annual honors convocation, Student Affairs presented its "Award of
Excellence" to three active student organizations, Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, Gamma Beta Phi

and the Southeastern Italian Club. Amy Gassen of Covington was named the Panhellenic
Council
Greek Woman of the Year and Ross Gares of Violet received the Interfraternity Council Greek
Man of the Year.
     Theta Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha and Theta Chi were recognized as the Greek
chapters having the highest grade point averages. Student Housing and Residential Services
recognized Sgt. Patrick Gipson of the University Police as outstanding staff member, while
Recreational Sports and Wellness presented its Employee of the Year Award to Brain Rockett of
Winnfield. Gamma Beta Phi presented its Outstanding Teacher honor to biological sciences
professor William Font.
     Recreational Sports and Wellness' intramural sports awards went to Livingston Hall,
resident hall points champion; Tau Kappa Epsilon, male Greek points champion and all-campus
champion, and Theta Phi Alpha, female Greek points champion.
     Individual award winners were:

2001-2002; Tynette Hawkins, Female Role Model; Latoya Self, Student Foundation Leadership

     CHALMETTE   James Moeller, Campus Activities Board Philippe Scholarship; Danielle
Bourquard, Student Foundation Leadership Award.
     DESTREHAN   Jessie Guilliot, Male Resident Assistant of the Year.
     FRANKLINTON   Jessica Young, Senior Alumni Award.
     HAMMOND   Jada Agomuo, Highest Greek GPA for a Pan-Hellenic Council Member;
Casey Copeland, Student Housing and Residential Services Male Rising Star Award; Karolena
Belak, Female Resident Assistant of the Year; Raghuveer Dodda, William Hodding Carter
Scholarship; Joelle McWilliams, Student Foundation Leadership Award.
