SLU STUDENTS’ DIGITAL DESIGNS CHOSEN FOR BOOK
HAMMOND -- Works by three Southeastern Louisiana University digital design students have been included in a new book, “The Digital Designer: 101 Graphic Design Projects for Print, the Web, Multimedia & Motion Graphics.”
The book by Stephen Pite, published by Delmar Learning, is a companion text for design teachers and students, said Southeastern digital design professor Gary Keown. The Southeastern students are among 177 student designers whose work was chosen from hundreds of submissions.
Included in the book is a CD cover design by Jamie Burkhalter of Franklinton, a newspaper advertisement for Southeastern’s KSLU-90.9 public radio station designed by Mark Landry of Hammond, and a restaurant menu designed by Leah Standley of Mandeville.
In his preface, Pite said that the development of the book included “the direct participation of literally hundreds of graphic design students and faculty from throughout the United States.
“The idea was to offer visual evidence that dynamic design programs across the American college landscape are contributing to a new direction in graphic design,” he said.
Keown said the Southeastern pieces chosen were all class assignments. Keown submitted works by 10 student designers.
In Southeastern’s Digital Art Center (DAC), which experts have praised as “a national-level lab,” Keown and colleague John Valentino teach classes in basic, intermediate and advanced digital design and art. The DAC’s three labs house more than 50 state-of-the-art Macintosh computers. The center also includes a large format printer, video studio, printing room, photo shoot room, faculty offices, an art gallery, and a student lounge. Students are learning graphic design software such as Director, Flash, Freehand, GoLive, Photoshop and Quark Express.
For additional information about the digital design program, contact Keown at 985-549-5419 or gkeown@selu.edu.
