ANOTHER FIRST PLACE WIN ENDS SLU FALL DEBATE SEASON
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's debate team ended a successful fall
semester debate season with a first place ranking at the Vanderbilt University Debate
Tournament held Nov. 11-14.
Southeastern debaters Carl Gauthier of Greenwell Springs and Ashley Smith of
Hammond won first place in the team division and defeated teams from the University of
Georgia, Georgia State University, Morehouse College, Mercer University, University of
Arkansas and the University of Miami.
"The Vanderbilt University tournament is the largest and most competitive debate
tournament in the south this fall," said Scott Elliot, coach of the Southeastern debate team.
The team's ranking at Vanderbilt is one of many victories for the Southeastern students.
This fall the team has achieved success in tournaments at Middle Tennessee State University,
Valdosta State University, Sam Houston State University, University of Alabama and Louisiana
State University.
The Southeastern team won first place overall, first place novice and second place junior
varsity team at Middle Tennessee State University.
Moreover, the Southeastern varsity debate team took third place at Valdosta State
University and third and fourth place at Sam Houston University. Also, at the University of
Alabama, the team was third place overall and placed second in the novice division.
Southeastern's debate team also took second and third place in the varsity team division,
first place in the novice team division and first place for best overall program at Louisiana State
University.
