DEBATE TEAM SWEEPS TOURNEY
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's debate team, ranked 20th in the nation
and first in the south central region last year by the Cross Examination Debate Association, is
continuing its winning ways in 1997.
SLU debaters took first place in every division at the recent Louisiana State University-
Shreveport Regional Tournament, said Southeastern communication professor Scott Elliot, director of
forensics.
Divisions included Overall Team; Overall Debate Program; Varsity Team (Andrea Whalen of
Tampa, Fla., and Jason Stone of Frederick, Ok.); Novice Speaker (Jessica Rushing of Pt. Vincent);
Novice Team (Rushing and Stone) and "Fastest Speaker" (Kenny Trent of Ft. Payne, Ala.).
Whalen was also a third place finisher in the "Fastest Speaker" category, while Judson
Eldredge of Baton Rouge also took fourth place in the Novice Speaker category and Trent was fourth
in the Varsity Speaker category.
At a tournament at McNeese State University, Eldredge was first in the Novice Speaker
division and Celeste Seitz of Mandeville was third.
The Southeastern debate team will host its second "Mardi Gras in Louisiana Speech and
Debate Tournament," which will attract 40-50 teams from throughout the nation, Feb. 7-9.
