SLU DANCEWORKS CHOSEN FOR NATIONAL GALA
HAMMOND -- "Optional Features," a dance choreographed by Southeastern Louisiana
University dance instructor and graduate Dana Brewer of Hammond, has been selected for the
national American College Dance Festival's trio of gala concerts at the John F. Kennedy Center
for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., May 20-22.
"Optional Features" was among four out of 45 dances chosen for the gala from the
American College Dance Festival's South Central Region. Members of Southeastern's dance
company, danceworks, performed Brewer's work at the regional festival at Sam Houston State
University in Huntsville, Texas, Feb. 28-March 2.
"Optional Features" dancers are Stacie Dauterive, Julie Murry, Heather Brown
and Bridget Talamo, all of New Orleans, and Jeanne Labordette of Chalmette.
"Dana's work was one of the best and most innovative at the festival," said dance
professor and danceworks director Martie Fellom. "In their comments the judges, who were
among the most prestigious I have seen at a festival, did not make one suggestion for
improvement. We are so proud of this achievement."
Judges were University of California at Irvine professor Donald McKayle, California
dance company director Tandy Beal and New York dancer and choreographer Sean Curran.
"Transmission VI: Leaving Hurts Me Too," a solo danced and choreographed by Keith
"Skip" Costa of Loranger, was also performed for the regional festival judges. Costa was invited
to perform the work at the New Orleans Ballet Association's donor party at the Theatre for the
Performing Arts in New Orleans on March 14.

"Optional Features" and "Transmission VI" are among the works that will be performed
at danceworks' spring concert, March 21 and 22 at SLU's Vonnie Borden Theatre. Tickets for the
7:30 p.m. concert are $5 general admission, $2 students and senior citizens. The concert will
feature 10 dances choreographed and performed by Southeastern students, graduates and guests.
