SLU ANNOUNCES 1998 HOMECOMING COURT
HAMMOND -- Seven Southeastern Louisiana University students have been chosen to
reign over 1998 Homecoming festivities, Nov. 16-21.
Chosen as members of the court were seniors Kenya T. Morris of Roseland, Tysha
Moana Powell of Pearl River and Deanne (Dee Dee) Roussel of Luling; juniors Brandy Jene
Alford of Hammond and Tangie Jackson of New Orleans; sophomore Carla Brione Scott of
Ama and freshman LeKedra Ratonya Robertson of Denham Springs.
The 1998 Homecoming queen, the top junior or senior vote-getter in the recent campus
election, will be announced at halftime of the Homecoming basketball game when the Lions take
on Louisiana College at 2:05 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Southeastern University Center.
The court will also participate in Homecoming festivities such as the tip off pep rally at
noon on Monday, Nov. 16, the bonfire at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, and the Alumni Awards
Evening at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 in the University Center. 24th Judicial District Judge Sheldon
Fernandez, a 1960 Southeastern graduate and member of the Athletic Hall of Fame, will be
honored as "Alumnus of the Year" at the festive awards evening.
On Homecoming Day, Saturday, Nov. 21, the court will ride in the 11 a.m. parade
through downtown Hammond and will also attend the free pre-game barbecue and alumni
reunions at the Alumni Center.
Morris, the daughter of Walter and Lucille Morris, is a speech communication major and
sweetheart of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. She is a loan officer for the Student Government
Association, treasurer of the Pan-Hellenic Council, a member of the Black Student Caucus, the

Most Outstanding Student Organization and a 1997 and 1998 "Who's Who Among American
Colleges and Universities" nominee.
Powell, a speech, language and hearing major, is sweetheart of Alpha Kappa Alpha
sorority. She is the daughter of Mary Louise Powell. She is a member of Kappa Delta Pi Honor
Society and the National Students Speech, Language and Hearing Association. She also is a
Ronald E. McNair Scholar, was listed on the National Dean's List and in "Who's Who Among
College Students." Powell has been offered scholarships post graduate student by Syracuse
University and the University of Indiana.
Roussel, the daughter of Robert Roussel of Luling and Nanette Sissac of Slidell, is a mass
communication major. Senior class sweetheart, she is a member of Theta Phi Alpha fraternity,
and served as Panhellenic Council president for two years. Named Most Outstanding Greek in
spring 1998, she also is a member of Gamma Beta Phi, Lambda Pi Eta, Rho Lambda, the Order
of Omega, the Greek Judicial Board and is an Our Chapter-Our Choice alcohol education
facilitator. She has been a four-year recipient of a Board of Trustees scholarship and plans to
study communications law at Loyola University in New Orleans after graduating from
Southeastern in December.
Alford is a general biology major and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edward
Alford. She is sweetheart of the Pan-Hellenic Council, secretary of Zeta Phi Beta sorority and an
active member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist church. She was a 1996 honor graduate at
Hammond High School and was listed in "Who's Who Among American High School
Students." She is the recipient of an Academic Achievement Award.
Jackson, the daughter of Brenda A. Jackson, is majoring in nursing. She is sweetheart of
the Student Government Association and a member of Zeta Phi Beta sorority. She is president of
the Pan-Hellenic Council and is a member of the Student Nurses Association, Gamma Beta Phi,
Campus Activities Board, SLU Gospel Choir, the Peer Mentor Program, the Black Student
Caucus and the Greek Judicial Board. She was listed on the National Dean's List and participated
in the All-American Scholar Program.
Scott, sweetheart and treasurer of the SLU Gospel Choir, is the daughter of Brenda D.

1998 SLU HOMECOMING COURT Add Two
Scott and Curtiss Young. An elementary education major, she is an SGA senator, vice president
of the Black Student Caucus, and treasurer of Sisterhood. She is a member of Gamma Beta Phi,
the Campus Activities Board, the Peer Mentor Program and the SLU Female Role Model
program. In 1997-98, she was named the SLU Gospel Choir's "most dedicated soprano" and was
the CAB member with the highest academic average.
Robertson, the daughter of Pauline Grant Talbert, is majoring in secondary education. She
is sweetheart of the Campus Activities Board and the organization's special events director. She
is a member of Sisterhood, the Black Student Caucus, the Alcohol Awareness Board and the Peer
Mentor and Role Model programs.
