Seven Southeastern Louisiana University students have been named
to the 2002 Homecoming Court, which will reign over the festivities planned
for November 4-9. From left, seated, are Latoye Self of Baton Rouge, Jamie

SLU ANNOUNCES 2002 HOMECOMING COURT
HAMMOND -- Seven Southeastern
Louisiana University students have been chosen as members of the 2002 Homecoming
queen’s court. The women will reign over Homecoming festivities, November
4-9.
Members of the 2002 Homecoming
court are juniors Amanda L. Dillon of Franklinton, Ashley Dyer and Latoye
Self of Baton Rouge, Amy Lauren Gassen of Madisonville, and seniors Renata
Antoinette Granger of Kenner, Jamie Lynn Weary of Angie, and Dwilette Wilkes
of St. Louis, Mo.
The 2002 Homecoming queen, the
top junior or senior vote-getter in the recent campus election, will be
announced at halftime of the Homecoming basketball game when the Lions
take on the Spirit Express at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, November 9, at the University
Center.
The court will also participate
in Southeastern’s week-long Homecoming festivities, including the tip-off
pep rally at noon on Monday, Gumbo Ya Ya on Wednesday, the Pride Day Two
Tons of Fun Food Drive and bonfire on Thursday and the Alumni Awards Evening
on Friday.
On Homecoming Day, the court
will ride in the 11 a.m. parade through downtown Hammond and will attend
the free pre-game picnic at the Alumni Center.
Dillon, the daughter of Michael
and Alberta Dillon, is an English education major minoring in history.
She is the sweetheart of the Southeastern Gospel Choir, and is also secretary
of the ensemble. She was an African-American Achievement Award recipient
and member of the National Dean’s List.
Dyer, a human resources major,
is sweetheart and member of Gamma Beta Phi national honor and service society
and the daughter of Glynn and RayLynn Dyer. She is a member of the Student
Government Association, the Society for Human Resource Management, and
Circle K.
Gassen, the daughter of Paula
Gassen and the late Glenn Tyrney Sr., is a marketing major and is sweetheart
of Kappa Delta Tau fraternity. She is a member of Phi Mu sorority, American
Marketing Association, and Gamma Beta Phi national honor and service society.
She
is president of the Panhellenic Council, a 2002 Leaders Entering Another
Dimension (LEAD) Retreat facilitator, and the Greek Woman of the Year for
2002. She also is a recipient of the Green “S” Award.
Granger is the daughter of Cheryll
and Samuel Granger and is a kinesiology major concentrating in exercise
science and health promotion. She is sweetheart of the Southeastern chapter
of the NAACP.
Self, an accounting major, is
the daughter of Jimmy and Delories Self. Sweetheart of the Campus Activities
Board, she is treasurer of the Black Student Union and recipient of the
Southeastern Leadership Foundation Award. She is a member of the American
Marketing Association and a peer advisor for Project PULL (Promoting Unity
through Leadership and Learning). Self was also a Dean’s List student for
two years and has previously served as secretary for the Campus Activities
Board.
Weary, the daughter of James
and Alfreda Weary, is sweetheart of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. She is
a history major and member of the Judicial Board and the Pan-Hellenic Council.
She is a Dean’s List student.
Wilkes, a criminal justice and
sociology major, is sweetheart of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. She is the
daughter of Patricia Nash and granddaughter of C.B. and Rosie Wilkes. She
is the secretary of Delta Sigma Theta and head of the committee that staged
the first and second annual Breast Cancer Walk/Run. A member of the Southeastern
track and field team, she has won all-conference titles and holds school
records. Wilkes also serves on the Pan-Hellenic Council and Track Phi Track
and currently is an intern for the Amite Probation and Parole Office.
