SOUTHEASTERN COACHING INSTITUTE OFFERS COACHING CLINIC
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University will offer a two-day clinic for current
and aspiring coaches, Friday and Saturday, June 25 and 26.
The clinic is part of the university's new Summer Coaching Institute. Instruction will
focus on football, basketball and volleyball coaching. The clinic is open to men and women who
coach or would like to coach on any level. The costs $25 to attend.
"There is a lack of coaches out there now," said Gayle Neal, assistant dean for Continuing
Education. "The coaches in the area wanted input from Southeastern. The Louisiana Football
Coaches Association, the Louisiana Basketball Coaches Association and the Coaches
Association were supportive of the idea, so we created the Coaching Institute."
Participants can expect to get the basics and more, Neal said. Instructors will give
direction in the fundamentals of coaching and team concepts. Topics include various defense
programs, "Sport and Heat Related Injuries," "Becoming a Volleyball Official," "Tests and
Measurements in Strength Development," practice techniques and more.
Along with Southeastern coaches and staff and area high school coaches, scheduled
instructors include Gayle Hatch, senior U.S. international coach, USA weight lifting; John Brady
of Louisiana State University; Ricky Broussard of Nichols State University; Dr. Darlene Kluka
of
Grambling State University; Steve Campbell of Southwest Mississippi Community College and
Gene Rushing of Louisiana College.
Additional activities include a reception for clinic participants and retired coaches and a
pre-clinic Coaches Golf Scramble on Thursday, June 24. The golf scramble will be held at
Springview Country Club in Amite. Cost to participate is $40.
