CLASSIC CAR RESTORATION COURSE OFFERED AT SOUTHEASTERN
HAMMOND If its time to get that old mustang off the blocks and on the road then
perhaps Southeastern Louisiana University' course on Classic Car Restoration is the answer.
Southeastern's division of Continuing Education is offering the eight week course Tuesdays or
Thursdays from 6-8 pm beginning March 1.
Southeastern drafting design professor Louise Bostic, who has been restoring classic cars
since the early 1980's, says this class is ideal for the person who is a non-professional autobody
person, loves classic cars and would like to have one as a hobby, but isn't quite sure of the
investment of money and time. "People who've started restoring a car and feel they may be in
over their head, those who want to do it and don't know where to start, or those who are just
contemplating doing it can take the course," said Bostic. "This course will give them the current
cost of tools and equipment needed. Once they take the course, they can decide if it's feasible
hobby."
Bostic's course will answer questions of whether a car is in a condition to be restored or
repaired, it will go through seven different repairs, and consider cost, installation and overall
time
required. The course will not cover engine repair or major automotive repair. "We're talking
about a car that already has an engine, transmission and working mechanical parts."
Bostic will provide a car that she is now restoring as an example for the class. Known as
the "mustang lady", Bostic began her hobby when she was looking for a safe car for her 16 year
old son. She was teaching auto body at a technical college in Oklahoma at the time. "The early
1980's was a dark period for autos," said Bostic. "There had been a metal shortage in the 70's and
the cars I looked at in my price range were made of poor quality metal." A friend offered to sell

her his 1966 mustang. Bostic said it was in bad shape, but she could tell it was a heavy, safe car
so she decided to restore it. She has been restoring mustangs ever since.
Bostic is excited about offering the course in Hammond. "I find that Louisiana is a rich
source of these automobiles. There's lots of cars and lots of parts around," she said. "Classic car
restoration is an interest that seems to cross economic and age lines. I'm excited about the class
and expect students of all ages."
Bostic who is a sculpturer and has a degree in art says restoring automobiles is really a
natural transition for her. "Cars are sculpture. It's like restoring a work of art. The designers of
the 50's and 60's were artists,"she said admiringly.
The fee for the course is $50 and class size is limited. For more information contact
