SOUTHEASTERN CHOIRS TO PERFORM APRIL 14
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana
University’s Concert Choir and Women’s Chorale will present their spring
concert, “Choral Dances,” at 7:30 p.m., April 14, at the Pottle Music Building
Auditorium.
The 20-voice Concert Choir and
16-voice Women’s Chorale are conducted by Southeastern music professor
Alissa Mercurio Rowe, assisted by senior vocal performance major Patricia
Ramirez of Hammond.
Guest soloists are tenor Cedric
Bridges, harpist Catherine Anderson; and pianists Charles Effler, interim
director of the Opera-Music Theatre Program, and graduate assistant Hristo
Birbochukov of Haskovo, Bulgaria. The concert is free.
In the first half of the concert,
the Concert Choir, Southeastern’s premier vocal ensemble, will perform
“Choral Dances” from Benjamin Britten’s “Gloriana.” Rowe said “Choral Dances”
begins Act II of “Gloriana,” which debuted at London’s Covent Garden in
1953. It vocally depicts a state visit by Queen Elizabeth I during which
she is entertained by a masque, a series of choral dances in which representatives
of time and concord, country girls, young rustics and fisherman all pay
the queen homage.
The Women’s Chorale will sing
the Serbian Gypsy dance “Niska Banja” and “Songs for Women’s Voices,” musical
settings of six poems by American poet May Swenson.
Following intermission, the Concert
Choir will perform “Liebeslieder Walzer (Love Song Waltzes), op. 52" by
Johannes Brahms.
