SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS RECEIVE $5,000 OCS STIPENDS
HAMMOND -- Five Southeastern Louisiana University senior social work students have been awarded $5,000 stipends through a special program funded by a Louisiana Office of Community Services Title IV-E grant.
The program, now in its seventh year at Southeastern, is designed to prepare professional practitioners in the field of child welfare. Each year, participants are selected based on scholarship, leadership and commitment to work with at-risk families and children, said Maurice Badon, coordinator of Southeasternís child welfare program.
Chosen to participate in 2002 were Crystal Effler, Ponchatoula; Toni Flad, Covington; Damon Lowrey and Deanna Roberts, Denham Springs; and Jacqueline Vidrine, Eunice. They have commited to take three child welfare courses, serve an internship in local child welfare offices and work in the field for a year following graduation.
The grant also funds the studentsí participation in social work and child welfare conferences.
