SOUTHEASTERN TO GATHER INPUT ON PHYSICAL MASTER PLAN
     HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University and a team of architects will take an
in-depth look at the campus' land use needs and issues in a week-long workshop called a 
"charrette."
     The charrette, described as a "quick but intense study," is scheduled for Sept. 15-21. The
event will be conducted by Southeastern Facility Planning and Foresite, a joint venture between
Holly & Smith Architects, Inc. of Hammond and Architects Southwest, Inc. of Lafayette. The
university and architects are working to create a campus physical master plan. 
     Southeastern Facility Planning Director Michael Rickenbaker said Southeastern is the first
University of Louisiana System institution to undertake the extensive master plan process.
     The charrette opens on Wednesday, Sept. 15 with a keynote address by Richard Dober, an
internationally known campus planner and author whose four seminal books include "Campus
Planning." Dober, who is with Dober, Lidsky, Craig and Associates, Inc., of Belmont, Mass.,
will speak at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theatre. His address, which will be followed by a
reception, is open to the public.
     Michael Holly of Holly and Smith Architects said Dober is "the modern day father of
university master planning." His talk, Holly said, will focus on issues surrounding campus
planning as they relate to Southeastern.
     Throughout the week, Rickenbaker said he and his fellow planners, headquartered in the
former bookstore area  in East Stadium, will brainstorm with administrators, faculty, students,
city and parish officials and adjacent property owners on topics such as future building and
expansion sites, parking, reforestation and how the campus relates to the surrounding
community. 
     Holly said ideas and suggestions will be turned into images "as we go," by artist Michael
Morrissey of Toronto, Canada. "Participants will be able to see the planning process happen right
before their eyes," he said.
     Morrissey's images will be displayed and the charrette's findings detailed in a final
presentation and reception at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 22, in the Student Union Theatre. The
final session also is open to the public.
