SLU HIGH SCHOOL COOPERATIVE PROGRAM WINS NATIONAL RECOGNITION
HAMMOND -- The Southeastern Louisiana University College of Basic Studies' High
School Cooperative Program has won national recognition from the Council for Advancement
and Support of Education.
The program was selected for a "grand gold" award the highest honor in the "School
and College Partnership" category of CASE's national "Circle of Excellence" awards
competition.
Designed to reduce the numbers of college students who need remediation in
mathematics and English, the High School Cooperative Program in 1998-99 partnered with 15
classes and teachers at Walker High School, Amite High School, Ponchatoula High School,
Slidell High School, Salmen High School, Mandeville High School and St. Paul's High School
in Covington.
The program gives high school students with American College Test scores of 16 in
reading and17 in mathematics the opportunity to satisfy developmental requirements in English
or mathematics before entering Southeastern. The project is administered by Sarah Spence, head
of the Developmental Education Department and developmental mathematics instructor Gwen
Autin.
"We are very pleased to receive the CASE award," Spence said. "Preparing students for
college work is a pertinent issue, and Southeastern has created the High School Cooperative
program to bridge the gap for students in English and mathematics."
"It is fitting that this innovative program, which addresses a national educational concern,
be recognized on a national level," President Sally Clausen said. "I am very proud of the
program's results and the efforts of the individuals who have worked so hard to make it happen."
The CASE Circle of Excellence Awards Program identifies and rewards excellence in
alumni relations and communications. The program includes 44 categories in the areas of alumni
programming, institutional relations, electronic and new media, periodicals, and publications.
Southeastern will receive its award at CASE's International Assembly in July in Boston, Mass.
