SLU'S ROCK 'N ROAR FEST III OFFERS KIDS CAMPS, FUN FOR ALL
     HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's third annual campus-community
festival, "Rock 'n Roar Fest," will be full of family fun, especially for children who can have a
good time while brushing up their skills in baseball, art, computers and dance.
     The March 13  festival, designed to designed to showcase Southeastern's fine academics
and fun atmosphere for visiting District Literary Rally high school students, alumni and
community friends, will also offer a series of children's camps -- as well as entertainment for all
ages.
     Alumni Relations director Pittman said a camp for young baseball enthusiasts is
scheduled for 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. at Alumni Field, the Southeastern Lion's baseball diamond.
The camp is open to children ages 6-13 for a $5 fee.
     Members of the Sims Memorial Library staff will teach Rock 'n Roar visitors ages 8-12
how to search for information on the Internet as well as other computer skills in Room 355 on
the
library's third floor.  Computer camps sessions are scheduled for 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
(Participants must choose and attend the selected session.) The computer camp also has a $5 fee. 
     Art education students and the Hammond Regional Arts Center will offer a hands-on art
camp for children ages 5-12 from 9-11:30 a.m. Don Marshall, director of Southeastern's Cultural
Resource Management Program and Clark Hall Gallery, said the camp, which costs $5, will take
place in the old Southeastern bookstore in East Stadium.
     Lionette Alumni will offer a mini-version of their popular summer dance camp for
children ages 4-12 from 9-11:45 a.m. at the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building. The
camp's
$15 fee includes lunch, a keepsake and awards. The camp will end with a performance by the
young participants for parents and other guests.
     Camp applications are available at the Alumni Center, 500 W. University Ave., 504-549-
2150. Space is limited, so reservations should be made early.
     An awards ceremony for all camps is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Alumni Field, prior to
the 1 p.m. Southeastern Lions vs. McNeese State home baseball game. All camp participants and
their parents/guardians will receive free admission to the game. (Children participating in the
awards ceremony must be accompanied by an adult.)
     Rock 'n Roar, which is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., also plans a petting zoo with
goats, rabbits and other animals; a basketball free throw; a space walk and other children's
games.
     Rock 'n Roar patrons of all ages can also enjoy food and  music; displays of Harley
Davidson motorcycles and antique cars; a plant sale, volleyball tournament and educational
displays by Southeastern departments. Guests will also be able to obtain Southeastern admissions
applications and financial aid and campus job information.
     North Oaks Health System and Southeastern's School of Nursing will sponsor a health
fair and the Daily Star and Southeastern's Family and Consumer Sciences Department are
sponsoring a cooking with categories for children, Southeastern students and community
members.
     The Ikon Oaks Classic race, which benefits Special Olympics, will also join the Rock 'n
Roar Fest schedule. Day of race pre-registration for Ikon Oaks Classic will begin at 7 a.m. with
the 1-mile fun run/walk beginning at 8 a.m. and the 5K at 9 a.m. A post-race award celebration
and raffle will be held in Strawberry Stadium immediately following the race. The celebration
will feature raffles, cajun music and refreshments.
