SLU'S ROCK 'N ROAR FEST V OFFERS KIDS CAMPS, FUN FOR ALL
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's fifth annual campus-community
festival, "Rock 'n Roar," will be full of fun for children and adults, said Alumni Director Kathy
Pittman.
Scheduled for March 24 at the War Memorial Student Union, the festival will offer
children's camps for baseball, softball, art and dance and a genealogy workshops for adults. In
addition, University Police will offer free children's identification packets -- finger printing and
photo -- for young Rock 'n Roar participants.
Now in its fifth year, Rock 'n Roar was designed to showcase Southeastern's fine
academics and fun atmosphere for visiting District 8 Literary Rally high school students, alumni
and community friends. This year, some 2,500 students from 61 high schools will be on campus
to compete in a variety of academic subjects.
Pittman said a camp for young baseball enthusiasts is scheduled for 9 to 11:30 a.m. at
Alumni Field, the Southeastern Lion's baseball diamond. The camp is open to children ages six
to 13 for a $5 fee. Girls ages six to13 can also boost their skills at the softball camp, which will
be held at the same time in Strawberry Stadium. Baseball and softball camp participants will
receive free passes to the Lions baseball and Lady Lions softball home games, scheduled for 1
p.m and 5 p.m., respectively.
Art education students will offer a hands-on art camp for children ages five to 12 from 9-
11:30 a.m. The camp, which costs $5, will take place on the second floor of Clark Hall.
Lionette Alumni will offer a mini-version of their popular summer dance camp for
children ages four-12 from 9-11:30 a.m. at the Kinesiology and Health Studies Building. The
camp's $15 fee includes a snack, keepsake and awards. The camp will end at noon with a

performance by the young participants for parents and other guests.
Camp applications are available at the Alumni Center, 500 West University Ave., 504-
549-2150 or 1-800-SLU-ALUM, and parents can also register and pay for the camps online,
Pittman said.
"While we love having people visit us at the Alumni Center, we know busy parents
appreciate not having to make an extra trip to pick up registration forms for the children's
camps," Pittman said. "With our new secure server, which makes online credit card payments
easy and safe, they can now just log on to www.selu.edu/roarfest, and register and pay in
minutes."
While their children are enjoying the camps, adults can learn the basics of who and where
to find information about family history and how to record and share the information. Beth Stahr,
a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists, will present an introduction to basic
genealogical research, record-keeping, record identification, local sources of information,
genealogical etiquette and Internet sources for family history research. The session is scheduled
for 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the library, room 355. A $10 fee and preregistration (at the Alumni
Center) is required.
Rock 'n Roar V, which is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., also plans a petting zoo and
space walk, kiddie rides, and ambulance, fire truck, police car, motorcycle and antique car
displays. Rock 'n Roar patrons of all ages can also enjoy food and music, a plant sale, cooking
contest, health fair, arts and crafts, and educational displays by Southeastern departments.
Guests will also be able to obtain Southeastern admissions applications and financial aid
and campus job information.
