SLU OFFERS VARIETY OF SUMMER CAMPS

     HAMMOND -- Registration is now underway for Southeastern Louisiana University's
summer recreation day camp and specialty camps in music and art.
     Young artists, ages 6-13 can participate in morning or afternoon sessions of the Art
Education Workshop, July 10-20, Monday-Thursday. The morning session is scheduled for
9:30-11 a.m. and the afternoon session from 2-3:30 p.m., both in Clark Hall.
     Under the direction of Southeastern art students supervised by visual arts professors Kim
Finley-Stansbury and Ronald Kennedy, students will create artwork in a variety of media based
on the theme "Your Family, Yourself and Your Music." Young participants will make
homemade musical instruments "with an artistic flare," the professors said. After seven days of
instruction, students will participate in an open house, displaying and celebrating their work.
     Enrollment is limited to 75 students per session. The cost is $45.
     Southeastern's Summer Day Camp is open to children ages 5-10 and provides a variety
of sport skill acquisition, physical fitness and recreational games. There are two two-week
session -- June 5-16 (Session I) and  June 19-30 (Session II)   and one three-week session,
July 10-28 (Session III). The camp is held 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, at the Kinesiology
and Health Studies Building. Extended care is available from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
     Costs are $150 for the two-week sessions and $225 for the three-week session. Deadlines
are June 2 for Session I, June 16 for Session II and July 7 for Session III. A $25 fee will be
assessed after the deadlines. 
     Budding musicians can participate in the Young Musicians Camp, July 10-21, 8 a.m.-8
p.m., Monday-Friday. Students should have finished the fourth-tenth grades. The camp program,
which is coordinated by veteran Southeastern music professor Jerry Voorhees, includes band,
small ensembles, evening recitals, choral singing, music theory, private lessons and recreation. 
     Music professor Yakov Voldman's Community Music School String Academy will 
again be included in the camp's program. The morning session, 8 a.m.-noon, is open young string 
and piano players at a cost of $100.  The full-day session is $250, but families enrolling more
than one child will receive a $50 discount per student. Enrollment is limited, early registration is
encouraged.
