70 YEARS OF BOY SCOUT HISTORY COMES TO SOUTHEASTERN
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University s Center for Regional Studies and
Clark Hall Gallery are hosting a special exhibit celebrating the history of area Boy Scouting.
A History of Scouting in the Istrouma Area Council opens Feb. 1 with a 6-8 p.m.
reception in the Center for Regional Studies, located on the second floor of Sims Memorial
Library.
The Center for Regional Studies is devoted to promoting the history and culture of this
region," said Director Samuel Hyde. "Scouting is the primary vehicle for social and moral
development of our regional youth, therefore we are very proud to host this Boy Scout exhibit.
The exhibit, which will be on display throughout the month of February, features a
collection of Boy Scout memorabilia spanning 70 years. It includes displays of Boy Scout
uniforms and utensils from the turn of the century as well as field books, handbooks and
camporee paraphernalia. Also on display will be facsimilies of two Norman Rockwell paintings,
on loan from the National Museum of Scouting. The paintings originally were commissioned by
the Boy Scots of America in the 1920s and 1930s.
Center for Regional Studies hours are 8a.m.-4:30, weekdays and 9 a.m.-1 p.m.,
Saturdays. Hours will be extended until 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, and at 9 a.m. that day the
public can enjoy the presentation of a storyteller from the "Circle of Four Rivers," a group of
professional storytellers that includes Robert Valentine, founder of the Storycrafting Project of
the National Scouting Museum in 1986.
For more information on the Boy Scout exhibit, call Hyde, 504-549-2151, or Roy
