SLU PILOT PROGRAM PREPAPERS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE
HAMMOND -- Area high school students preparing for college can now get a head start
in math and English through a new pilot program at Southeastern Louisiana University, SLU
President Sally Clausen told a joint meeting of the Louisiana Board of Regents and Board of
Elementary and Secondary Education earlier this week.
Appearing before the joint meeting with Clausen were SLU students Tina Stephens and
Maureen Roszkowski of Mandeville, Amite High School senior Maria Cunningham and St.
Tammany, Livingston and Tangipahoa superintendents of education Leonard Monteleone,
Rogers Pope and Virgil Allen.
"It is an excellent program that helps these young students be successful in high school
and college," Clausen said.
The pilot program, which includes high school courses in math and English, gives high
school seniors an opportunity to receive additional tutoring in math and English. If the students
pass proficiency tests in those area, they will not have to take developmental courses in college.
In defense of on-going developmental college programs, Clausen said "students are
coming to us at different times of their lives. It is short sighted to throw out a program that helps
so many people just to save money."
Schools participating in the pilot program include Amite High (Tangipahoa Parish),
Fontainebleau, Mandeville, Northshore, Pearl River, Salmen and Slidell High (St. Tammany
Parish) and Walker High (Livingston Parish).
