SLU TO FORM "BACCHUS" CHAPTER OF PEER EDUCATORS
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University is forming a chapter of BACCHUS,
an international association of college and university based peer education programs focusing on
alcohol abuse prevention and other student health and safety issues.
Sponsor Jenny Hollander, a university counselor, said an interest meeting has been
scheduled for 5 p.m., February 12, in the Health and Kinesiology Building, room 121.
Hollander said BACCHUS, a name usually associated with the Greek god of wine, stands
for "Boosting Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students." The
initiative began in 1975 at the University of Florida and now includes more than 850 affiliates in
the United States and chapters in Australia, China, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Canada.
According to the organization's web site, BACCHUS focuses on the development and
promotion of positive lifestyles and decision-making skills. Students conduct programs,
campaigns, and projects that create awareness, education, and encourage positive
decision-making. Each chapter plans programs according to the needs of their specific campus.
Hollander said she envisions the Southeastern BACCHUS members assisting with
monthly alcohol, tobacco and drug awareness programming for Southeastern students, as well as
creating additional wellness-related projects.
