SCULPTURE EXHIBIT AT SLU'S CLARK HALL
HAMMOND An exhibit of sculpture by artist-educator Michael Aurbach will be
featured March 13-April 14 at Southeastern Louisiana University's Clark Hall Gallery.
On the exhibit's opening day, March 13, Aurbach will lecture about his work in Clark
Hall and will be honored at an opening reception in the gallery from 4-6 p.m.
Aurbach teaches sculpture and drawing at Vanderbilt University. His socially inspired
sculpture and installations have been exhibited at museums, universities and galleries throughout
the United States. For nearly two decades his work has addressed issues related to death,
identity, and the plight of socially disenfranchised groups. His recent work is about the
ramifications of secrecy.
Aurbach has received numerous grants and awards, including the 1985 Southeastern
College Art Conference Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement. The National Endowment
for the Arts, the Southern Arts Federation, the Tennessee Arts Commission, Art Matters Inc., and
Vanderbilt University are among the institutions and foundations that have provided support for
his work.
He has had more than 40 solo exhibitions of his work since 1986 in galleries such as the
Bernice Steinbaum Gallery in New York, the University of Notre Dame and the North Dakota
Museum of Art.
Aurbach serves on the boards of the College Art Association, the Southeastern College
Art Conference, and the Mid-America College Art Association. Through CAA he has
participated in the development of professional guidelines and standards for artists and art
historians.
