SLU COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES HONORS TOP STUDENTS
     HAMMOND   Political science major Senad Zlator of Hammond and criminal justice
major Carl Newton Baker of Reserve are the recipients of the 2002 Dean's Award, the top honor
of Southeastern Louisiana University 's College of Arts and Sciences.
     Baker and Zlator, a native of Bosnia, were among the students recognized at the college's
annual honors convocation on May 1.
     At the 2 p.m. ceremony in the Pottle Music Building Auditorium, the college also joined
its sister colleges at Southeastern in recognizing an outstanding alumnus and outstanding
community partner.
     Andre Coudrain, a 1979 Southeastern graduate in government and former president of the
university's Student Government Association, received the College of Arts and Sciences alumni
honor. Coudrain, a New Orleans native who now practices law in Hammond, is a member and
past president of the Board of Supervisors of the University of Louisiana System.
     The Tennessee Williams New Orleans Literary Festival was honored as the college's
community partner. Since 1995, the college has co-sponsored the five-day March festival's
master class series. In 2002, Southeastern extended its sponsorship to include the "Tennessee
Willliams on the Northshore," which offered north shore communities productions of Williams'
"Suddenly Last Summer" at the Columbia Theatre for the Performing Arts as well as panel
discussions featuring notable writers.
     Representing the festival were Peggy Scott Laborde, president of the board; Patricia
Mason, vice president for development; and LouAnn Moorehouse, executive director.

ARTS AND SCIENCES HONORS -- Add One
     The college also announced departmental honors and scholarships and recognized Phi
Kappa Phi and the Thirteen Club inductees and Dean's List honor roll students.
     Two students, Michelle Denise Cudd of Hammond and Cadence L. Ellington of 
Sugarland, Texas, earned top honors in two departments. Ellington was honored as Outstanding
Graduating Senior in both mathematics and physics. Cudd tied with Ellington for the
Outstanding Graduating Senior in Mathematics award and also earned Outstanding Graduating
Senior in French honors.                 
     Also receiving departmental awards and scholarships:

     AMITE   Bill Sherman, Kenneth E. Dyson Award in Biological Sciences.

     COVINGTON   Leslie A. Sauviac, Martina Buck Award in History; Jennifer Wirtz,
Outstanding Graduating Senior in Psychology.
     FRANKLINTON   Jessica Marie Young, Outstanding Graduating Senior in
Communication; John Pierce, Outstanding Freshman in Mathematics. 
     GREENWELL SPRINGS   Carl Martin Gauthier Jr., Kenneth E. Dyson Award in
Biological Sciences.
     HAMMOND   Edward Richmond, Excellence in English; Angel Marie Monistere,
Excellence in Liberal Arts Studies; Dana Meidinger, James Wilcox Award in Music; Sandy
Blanchard, Ralph R. Pottle Sr. Honor Scholarship in Music; Judy Price, Outstanding Graduating
Senior in Cultural Resource Management.
     KENTWOOD   Floyd Fowler, Dr. Robert Carl Brown Scholarship Award in
Mathematics; Kevin K. Cutrer, D Vickers Award for Creative Writing.
     LORANGER   Rachel Methvin, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Visual Arts.
     MANDEVILLE   John Joseph Nelson, Kenneth E. Dyson Award in Biological
Sciences; Adrienne Christian, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Spanish; Don Elbers,
Outstanding Freshman in Mathematics.
