EDITORS: PHOTO ACCOMPANIES RELEASE -- PLEASE NOTE LOCAL INTEREST
ARTS & SCIENCES CONVOCATION HELD AT SOUTHEASTERN 
     HAMMOND   Seniors Julie Andries of Covington and Kimberly Foil of Bogalusa
shared the Dean's Award, the top honor at the annual Southeastern Louisiana University College
of Arts and Sciences honors convocation, Friday, April 16. Andries is a senior English major and
Foil is a senior psychology major. 
     Also at the convocation, student honorees and their families heard remarks from Roman
Helenaik, head of the department of History and Political Science, who is retiring in August after
35 years on Southeastern's faculty. Paul Riggs, director of Academic Services, was presented the
distinguished service award by John Miller, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Albert
Doucette, associate dean. Riggs, who has been with the university for 32 years, will retire in
December. 
     Departmental award winners and scholarship recipients were:
     Hammond - Emily Thompson, Outstanding Graduating Senior, Communication &
Theatre; Heidi Ransom, Martina Buck Award; Laura Schlecht, Outstanding Senior in
Mathematics; Claire Cannatella, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Sociology; Jeremy Howes, 
Patrick Ferry and Vincent Doge, Kenneth Dyson Memorial Scholarship; Rita Dottor and Kenya
Lawrence, James Wilcox Award in music; Maria Landa, Ralph Pottle Honor Scholarship; Brett
Duncan, Leu Award in political sciences; Gabriella Dahlgreen, Outstanding Graduating Senior in
Chemistry; Lou Ann Wallace, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Social Work.
     Robert - Peggy Penny, Kenneth Dyson Memorial Scholarship. 
     Ponchatoula - David Jenkins, Outstanding Senior in General Studies; Sherri Fisher,
Outstanding Graduate (Fall), Industrial Technology.
     Independence- Jason Calmes, Outstanding Senior in Mathematics and the Frank
Michelli Memorial Scholarship.
