SLU COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES HONORS TOP STUDENTS
     HAMMOND -- Jason Calmes of Independence, a Southeastern Louisiana University
senior with a double major in mathematics and Honors English and minors in philosophy,
history, Latin and physics, is the receipient of the 1998 Dean's Award, the top honor of
Southeastern's College of Arts and Sciences.
     Calmes, the son of Larry Calmes and Deborah LaRock, was among the students
recognized at the college's annual honors convocation on April 30. Dean John Miller said Calmes
has earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average and in addition to his double major, is also pursuing
minors in philosophy, history, Latin and physics. He is a member of the Gamma Beta Phi student
service organization and was on the Southeastern team that captured first place in Mathematics
Association of America competition. Calmes also received the Frank A. Michelli Memorial
Scholarship given by the mathematics department.
     Also at the convocation, student honorees and their families heard farewell remarks from
veteran history professor C. Howard Nichols, who is retiring after 39 years at Southeastern. "I
have never regreted becoming a teacher," said Nichols, who is the author of several books on
area history and long been recognized a Southeastern's unofficial historian and authority on
Louisiana history. 
     Nichols has also served for three years as the Women's Hospital Distinguished Teaching
Professors in the Humanities. Miller announced that the professorship will now be held by
Honors Program Director and English professor James Walter and that Pete Territo, assistant
professor of industrial technology, has been named the BellSouth Distinguished Professor in
Industrial Technology.
