ART DECO ON SOUTHEASTERN CAMPUS FOCUS OF LECTURES
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's historic art deco architecture
will be the focus of two free lectures Monday, May 17, in Clark Hall.
Johnathan Fricker, director of the Louisiana Division of Historic Preservation, will speak
on art deco in architecture at 2 p.m., and retired Southeastern history professor Howard Nichols
will talk about Southeastern's art deco design elements at 2:45 p.m. Nichols will also host a
walking tour of the campus at 4 p.m.
In addition, a slide show of works by six north shore artists will be shown a 3:30 p.m.
The participating artists are Stephen Hasslock, John Hodge and Alexei Kazanstev of Covington,
John Perilloux of Robert, Rick Brunner of Bush and Terry Wilde of Ponchatoula. The artists
have been asked to propose art deco inspired designs for future campus wall reliefs, furniture,
lighting and sculpture.
The lectures and artists' visit are sponsored by Southeastern's visual arts department and
supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Louisiana State Arts
Council
and the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture,
Recreation and Tourism.
