SLU CONCERT CHOIR TO PERFORM APRIL 16
HAMMOND -- The Concert Choir, Southeastern Louisiana University's elite vocal
ensemble, will present its spring concert on April 16 at St. Joseph's Abbey in Covington.
Conducted by Dirk Garner, the free concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. The choir will
perform William Byrd's "Mass for Four Voices," along with works by Bitten, Brahms, Orban
and Rubstov. The program is part of "Encore!", the Southeastern Music and Dramatic Arts
Department's annual spring concert series.
The Concert Choir's 30 singers are mainly Southeastern voice majors, all of whom won a
spot in the prestigious ensemble through audition. The Concert Choir frequently tours Louisiana
and recently traveled to Europe. In 1998, the choir's performance of the Bach "B Minor Mass"
won a "Tribute to the Classical Arts" award, an extension of the New Orleans area Big Easy
Entertainment Awards, in the new "Best Choral Arts Presentation" category.
Garner, director of choral activities at Southeastern, also directs Southeastern's Women's
Ensemble and University Chorus and the community choir, the Northshore Chorale. The
ensembles have also scheduled "Encore!" concerts in April and May.
In a program titled "Going to Heaven," the Women's Ensemble will perform works by
Britten, Jenner, Hennagin, and Thompson at 7:30 p.m., April 23, at the First United Methodist
Church, 220 Rue Denise in Hammond. The Northshore Chorale will join with the Concert Choir
and University Chorus for a performance on May 6, also at the First Methodist Church. The
choirs will perform "The Little Organ Mass" by Franz Joseph Haydn and "In Windsor Forrest"
by Ralph Vaughn Williams.
For additional information about the concerts, contact Garner at 985-549-2334 or
