LEAPIN' LIZARDS! AUDITIONS SCHEDULED FOR "ANNIE"
HAMMOND -- Leapin' Lizards! Southeastern Louisiana University is holding auditions
for "Annie."
Reviving its popular tradition of a summer musical, the Department of Music and
Dramatic Arts will stage the comic strip-inspired hit show June 28-30 at the Pottle Music
Building Auditorium. The production is co-sponsored by Gulf States Theatre's Hammond Palace
Theater, North Oaks Health System, Hibernia Bank and the Southeastern Development Foundation.
Auditions are scheduled May 14-16, also in the auditorium.
"This is a family show with a large cast of characters both adult and children," said
Producer Scharmal Schrock, director of Southeastern's Opera-Music Theatre program. " The
auditions are open to everyone and are not limited to Southeastern students."
Schrock said boys and girls age six and older may auditions at 3 and 7 p.m. May 14 and 3
p.m. May 15-16. Auditions for the numerous adult roles have been scheduled for 7 p.m. on May
15-16.
"Be prepared to sing your choice of vocal selection and provide the printed music for the
accompanist," Schrock said. "We will also ask you to read from a script and do an ensemble
movement routine." She said the script reading, routine and piano accompanist will all be
provided.
"Annie" will be produced by Schrock with guest director/choreographer Wendy Taucher
and conductor Charles Effler. Taucher, who is from New York City, has received national and
international acclaim as a director of numerous productions including "Annie," "The Sound of
Music," "Oliver," "West Side Story" and "Grease."
"Annie" tells the story of a spunky Depression-era orphan determined to find her parents,
who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel,
embittered Miss Hannigan. In adventure after adventure, Annie becomes friends with President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt and finds a new family and home with billionaire Oliver Warbucks,
his personal secretary Grace Farrell and a lovable mutt named Sandy.
Curtain time for the June 28-30 productions is 7:30 p.m. An 2 p.m. matinee is also
scheduled on June 30.
