NEW MUSIC FACULTY TEAM UP FOR RECITAL, MARCH 26
HAMMOND -- Two of the Southeastern Louisiana University Department of Music and
Dramatic Arts's newest faculty members will introduce themselves musically in a joint recital on
March 26.
Deborah Andrus, clarinet, and Carolyn Treybig, flute, will be joined on the Pottle Music
Building Auditorium stage by their music faculty colleague, pianist Henry Jones, for the free
7:30 p.m. program.
Treybig will perform a set of French contest pieces, the "Morceau de Concours," by
Gabriel Faure, Leo Delibes and Jules Massenet, and Paul Hindemith's "Sonata for Flute and
Piano." Andrus will be featured in "Hexad" by Paul Steinberg and "Sonata for Clarinet and
Piano" by Camille Saint-Saens.
The musicians will join together to perform"Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" by
Claude Debussy.
Treybig and Andrus joined the Southeastern music faculty in August 2001. Treybig
received her undergraduate degrees in music education and flute performance from the Baldwin-
Wallace Conservatory. She also earned master's degrees in flute performance and music history
from the University of Akron, and a doctoral degree in flute performance from the University of
Texas at Austin. Her primary teachers include William Hebert, George Pope, Peter Lloyd and
Jacqueline Hofto.
Previously, she served as adjunct instructor at the University of Southern Mississippi.
She currently resides in Hattiesburg, Miss., where she is an active recitalist and freelance
performer. At Southeastern, she teaches flute and music history and appreciation courses.
Andrus, who teaches clarinet, woodwind chamber music and music appreciation, holds
degrees in clarinet performance from State University of New York-Potsdam, and Michigan
State University and received a doctoral degree in clarinet performance from The Ohio State
University. Her teachers include Alan Woy, Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, James Pyne and Theodore
Oien.
Before coming to Southeastern, Andrus was on the faculty at Delta State University in
Cleveland, Miss. In summer 2000 and 2001, she was the featured soloist with the Ringgold
Band in Reading, Penn. She recently was appointed to teach clarinet at the New England Music
Camp in Oakland, Maine, in summer 2002.
A graduate of Yale University, Jones was a free-lance vocal coach and accompanist for
10 years in New York City, where he participated in a number of choral performances and vocal
recitals at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. He was musical director of a gymnastic exhibition
at Madison Square Garden, and for Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, including "Evita,"
"Jerome Robbins' Broadway," and "The Fantasticks."
Jones received his doctoral degree in piano from Louisiana State University. He headed
of the piano programs at Minot State University in North Dakota and Missouri Southern State
College in Joplin, Mo. At Southeastern, he teaches piano, class piano, piano literature, piano
ensemble, and music appreciation, and performs with the Southeastern Jazz Lions and
Southeastern Faculty Jazz Combo.
