CHRISTMAS TREE AIRLIFT TO AID MANCHAC PRAIRIE
Southeastern Louisiana University's Turtle Cove Environmental Research Station, the
Louisiana State Department of Natural Resources and the Louisiana National Guard will air lift
almost 1,000 Christmas trees into Manchac Swamp's "Prairie" in an on-going major effort to
save the swamp and Prairie from further erosion.
At 10 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 12), National Guard helicopters will pick up 30 bundles of
Christmas trees, each bundle containing over 30 trees, at Port Manchac near Manchac Pass and
drop them at an manmade breakwater being constructed along the Manchac-Lake Pontchartrain
coastline.
For additional information, contact Turtle Cove director Dr. Bob Hastings at 549-2141 or
Southeastern's Public Information Office (John Kemp, Christina Chapple or Michelle Chauvin).
