AIDS AWARENESS WEEK AT SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA UNIVERSITY
HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's Office of Student
Organizations/Greek Life, in conjunction with several other offices, will be sponsoring the
University's first AIDS Awareness Week Nov. 3-7. The highlight of the event will be sections
of the AIDS Quilt, which will be on display for the week in the Student Union Ballroom.
The AIDS Memorial Quilt is an ever-growing memorial to people lost to AIDS. It is also
a potent tool for HIV prevention education as well as a catalyst for political action against the
epidemic.
During the Awareness Week, anyone who has been affected by AIDS or has lost someone
to the disease will be invited to make a panel to add to the quilt. At 6:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 6,
in Room 212-B of the SLU Student Union, students and the community members will have the
opportunity to learn how to make a panel to remember their loved ones lost to AIDS.
A representative from the Louisiana Capital NAMES Chapter in Baton Rouge will make
the presentation, including an example panel that will provide participants with ideas for their
own panel. From a variety of fabrics, colors, and designs or bold paints and fine needlework,
any remembrance is appropriate. Participants do not have to be professional artist or sewing
experts to create a moving personal tribute.
Panelmakers will have the opportunity to dedicate their panels at a Nov.7 ceremony at
Southeastern. After the ceremony, the panels will be sent to San Francisco where they will join
more than 43,000 panels to become part of the AIDS Memorial Quilt.
For further information about the workshop, or AIDS Awareness Week, please call the
Office of Student Organizations/Greek Life at (504)-549-2120.
