HONOR SOCIETY FOR NON-TRADITIONAL STUDENTS AT SLU
HAMMOND -- A chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda, an honor society for non-traditional
students, has been organized at Southeastern Louisiana University.
Alpha Sigma Lambda is devoted to the advancement of scholarship and leadership, and to
the recognition of nontraditional students continuing their higher education. Membership in the
organization is open to students 25 or older, requires a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and
the student must have earned 24 semester hours towards a degree. Students do not have to take
classes full time, and membership is by invitation only.
"Alpha Sigma Lambda is a unique honor society in that it's member are excelling
academically while facing competing interests of family, community and work," said Milas
Love, director of the office of Adult, Commuter and Veterans Services and advisor to the new
chapter.
Alpha Sigma Lambda presents institutions with a truly prestigious opportunity to
recognize the special achievements of adult who accomplish academic excellence, Love said.
For the nontraditional student, the society stands as an inspiration for continuing scholastic
growth, a builder of pride through recognition, and an invitation to associate with similarly
motivated students.
Started in 1945, the organization has 280 chapters throughout the United States with four
in Louisiana. Southeastern is the first school in the University of Louisiana system to host a
chapter.
While this is not a service organization, Southeastern's honorees are expected to earn
three merits within an academic year. Two merits may be gained by attending any event on the
Southeastern calendar and a third merit can be earned by participating in events that the Non-
traditional Student Organization sponsors. "We hope this will make non-traditional students
more visible on campus and help to get them more involved in campus life," Love said.
