SOUTHEASTERN HOSTS AMERICAN COLLEGE DANCE FESTIVAL
HAMMOND -- More than 400 dancers from colleges throughout the South will gather at
Southeastern Louisiana University March 15-18 for the American College Dance Festival.
Southeastern's department of kinesiology and health studies is hosting the festival, which
features nightly concerts of student choreography and daily dance master classes, for the second
time since 1992, said Martie Fellom, director of Southeastern's dance program.
Fellom said the evening performances are open to the public and are scheduled for 7 p.m.
in Vonnie Borden Theatre. Tickets are $5, free for Southeastern students.
Serving as festival judges and master class presenters are Elizabeth Zimmer, dance editor
of "Village Voice" and contributor to the "Philadelphia Inquirer" and "Voice"; Byron Suber of
the Cornell University dance faculty, and Josie Moseley, a teacher and choreographer with the
Oregon Ballet Theatre. The judges will choose ten works for a gala concert on March 18 and,
from the ten, will select four dances to advance to the American College Dance Festival's
national showcase, held annually at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Skip Costa, a Southeastern graduate who founded and is artistic director of
COREmovement Project, will be the festival's guest artist.
Costa earned a bachelor's degree in theatre and dance from Southeastern, a master of fine
arts degree in movement studies and choreography at George Washington University and a
"movement certificate" from the Naropa Institute. At The Bridge in Manhattan he serves as
company-in-residence, teaches contemporary modern dance technique and physical theatre
movement to beginners and professionals and is associate director of Uptown Performance
Series. He also teaches at Dance Space Center and Broadway Dance Center. Costa will tour
COREmovement Project in Georgia, Minnesota, Louisiana, Germany and Russia.
