SLU HOSTS AFRICAN-AMERICAN ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS
HAMMOND -- Robert J. Penn of Hammond and Carla B. Scott of Ama were named
Male and Female Role Model of the Year at the recent African-American Achievement Awards,
hosted by Southeastern Louisiana University's Office of Multicultural and International Student
Affairs.
Scott, who also received the Outstanding Campus Leader award, has been involved in the
Black Student Caucus, the Campus Activities Board, the Gospel Choir, the Dream Team and
Gamma Beta Phi honor and service society. A junior elementary education major, she has been a
member of the Homecoming Court and an Orientation Leader.
Penn, a sophomore criminal justice major, works full time, but also finds time to be a
Boys and Girls Club volunteer and a junior deacon and Sunday School teacher in his church. He
is a member of the campus Criminal Justice Association.
Delta Sigma Theta sorority was chosen for the Unity Award, which goes to the African-
American Greek organization which has worked the hardest to bring about unity and cooperation
among the black student organization. Phi Beta Sigma was first runner-up and Zeta Phi Beta,
second runner-up.
Runners-up for the Male Role Model award were Corey Williams, Gonzales, first runner-
up, and Kenneth Gay, Lake Charles, second runner-up. Gay was also second runner-up for the
Outstanding Campus Leader award, while LaKedra Robertson of Denham Springs was first
runner-up. Brandi L. Bass of New Orleans was first runner-up and Meca Pierre of Edgard was
second runner-up for the Female Role Model award.

Baton Rouge; sophomores Ndifreke R. Bickham, Hammond, and Victoria Dillon, Franklinton;
juniors Samarence D. Hill, Mandeville, and Crystal L. Hicks, Destrehan; and seniors Quincy R.
Robertson, Ponchatoula, and Erin N. Robinson, Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.. Erin Robinson, a Lady
Lions basketball player, also received the Athlete-Scholar of the Year award.
More than 100 students received academic, leadership and athletic awards at the
ceremony. Students who received academic certificates for earning 3.0 or better grade point
