SOUTHEASTERN TUITION AID AVAILABLE FOR HISTORY TEACHERS
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University is offering free graduate school tuition to history teachers in 14 southeast Louisiana school districts through the Louisiana in Traditional American History Project.
Funded by a United States Department of Education grant to the Tangipahoa Parish School System and its partner Southeastern, the project is designed to provide teachers with high-quality American history content, improve student achievement in history, and help teachers meet certification standards mandated by the No Child Left Behind legislation.
Tuition assistance for one graduate level history course is being offered for Southeastern’s 2005 spring semester for a maximum of 14 eligible participants. Courses will be available both on-line and on Southeastern’s Hammond campus and satellite campuses in Baton Rouge and St.Tammany Parish. Access to courses will also be available through Louisiana Public Broadcasting.
Spring semester regular registration is Jan. 10-13. Classes begin on Jan. 18.
Participants include school districts in the parishes of East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, Pointe Coupee, St. Helena, St. Tammany, Washington, West Baton Rouge, West Feliciana, and Tangipahoa, and the cities of Bogalusa, Baker, and Zachary.
Project Director Ann Trappey said she is optimistic that teachers will take advantage of the free tuition offer.
“Teachers are learners, too. Free tuition takes down an important financial barrier to their learning and professional development,” she said.
“History teachers help us remember who we are as a people and nation,” said Bill Robison, head of Southeastern’s History and Political Science Department and a project leader.  “We’re delighted that Southeastern has this great opportunity for teachers.”
