SOUTHEASTERN, BRCC SIGN 2+2 COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT

BATON ROUGE –  Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond and Baton Rouge Community College today (April 24) signed a cooperative agreement designed to provide a seamless transition for students who graduate from the community college and intend to obtain a Southeastern bachelor’s degree.
With representatives of the Louisiana Board of Regents, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System and the University of Louisiana System attending the event in Baton Rouge, Southeastern President Randy Moffett and BRCC Chancellor Myrtle E. B. Dorsey signed the agreement officially establishing a “2+2 program” between BRCC’s general studies program and Southeastern’s College of Business and Technology.
Also signing the agreement were Leana Revell, BRCC vice chancellor for academic and student affairs, and John Crain, Southeastern provost and vice president for academic affairs. Representing the business programs at each institution were William Dufrene, BRCC coordinator of business programs, and Michael Budden, dean of Southeastern’s College of Business and Technology.
A “2+2 program” is a cooperative endeavor between a two-year community college program that offers associate degrees and a four-year institution that allows students to move seamlessly into a baccalaureate degree program. The agreement between BRCC and Southeastern is intended to permit students graduating from BRCC with an associate in general studies degree to enter Southeastern’s programs in general business, management, marketing, accounting or finance.
“Today we officially launch a major cooperative endeavor between two Louisiana higher education institutions. Our agreement is designed to further encourage our college students to make steady progress toward obtaining a baccalaureate degree,” said Southeastern’s Moffett. “This type of
program will enable our students to gain the education and relevant expertise they need to compete in today’s business environment.”
“These types of partnerships are vital to fulfilling the needs of our students,” Dorsey said. “Offering associate degrees that transfer provides optimum learning. The support in this 2+2 agreement among BRCC, Southeastern, and the system offices of LCTCS and the University of Louisiana System can only enhance the quality of education and life in our communities.”
Under the program, BRCC students who declare their intent to pursue a bachelor’s degree through Southeastern will be pre-admitted to the university. After successfully completing BRCC’s associate in general studies program with a business concentration, and meeting other specified requirements, students will be admitted to the university as juniors.
Under the plan, each participating student will be assigned a Southeastern faculty advisor who will work collaboratively with the BRCC campus to ensure that the student’s progress is tracked and that they are advised appropriately regarding transfer options.  The university will also provide a $500 scholarship each fall to a successful participating student enrolling in Southeastern’s College of Business and Technology.
BRCC, with an enrollment of 4,500 students, has an open admissions policy, accepting students who are graduates of state-approved high schools or individuals who have obtained the General Equivalency Diploma. Southeastern, which instituted a selective admissions policy three years ago, maintains an enrollment of more than 15,000 students. The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International accredits the business and accounting programs in Southeastern’s College of Business and Technology.
