COMEDIAN RICKEY SMILEY TO APPEAR AT SOUTHEASTERN FEB. 23
HAMMOND -- Stand-up comedian Rickey Smiley will bring his signature crank phone calls and hilarious impressions to Southeastern Louisiana University’s Cefalu Colisum on Feb. 23.
Tickets for the 8 p.m. show sponsored by the Campus Activities Board are $10 for the general public. Southeastern students, faculty and staff can purchase tickets for $5 (any quantity) with a university I.D.
Tickets are available in room 110 of Southeastern’s War Memorial Student Union from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., weekdays, and will also be sold beginning at 6 p.m. at Cefalu Coliseum on the evening of the concert.
A comedy circuit veteran and former host of BET’s “ComicView,” Smiley has established himself as a “clean” comic, known for his down home southern humor. His characters -- from Bernice and her church announcements to Coach McClainy and his lack of motivational skills -- have made him a favorite in the nation’s top comedy venues from intimate comedy clubs to sold-out crowds at Madison Square Garden, the Universal Amphitheatre and the Lincoln Center.
As “ComicView” host in 2000, Smiley led the show to its highest jump in ratings in the show’s 10-year history. In 2001-2003 BET signed him to host “The Way We Do It,” which became one of the network’s top five shows. Smiley was a guest presenter on the 2001 NAACP Image Awards and hosted the special awards banquet for the 2002 Stellar Gospel Music Awards.
In 2002, Smiley joined fellow heavyweight comedians D. L. Hughley, J. Anthony Brown, Bruce Bruce, Earthquake, and Sommore on the hugely successful Latham Entertainment Presents Tour, a multi-city mega stadium tour produced by Walter Latham of the Kings and Queens of Comedy. He also has appeared in feature films such as New Line Cinema’s hit “Friday After Next.”
