HAMMOND -- Daniel McCarthy, head of the Southeastern Department of Chemistry and Physics, has been selected as a member of New Orleans CityBusiness’s “Power Generation.”
He was one of 40 young professionals under the age of 40 whose success in business and other professional endeavors is “setting the pace for the future of the region and who are making a mark for themselves with their energy, ideas and commitment to excellence,” according to the business publication.
A resident of St. Tammany Parish, McCarthy’s general field of research is in the area of plasma physics. A rapidly evolving field focused on the nuclear fusion process of producing energy, plasma physics seeks to harness the same energy process used by the sun and stars, holding potential to develop an alternative energy source that is abundant and environmentally safe.
At home in the classroom teaching physics to undergraduate students, McCarthy also collaborates with international colleagues in institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. He currently holds a $90,000 magnetic fusion research grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
