SLU STUDENTS WIN MATH
PAPER COMPETITION -- Southeastern Louisiana University students Don
Elbers, left, a senior computer science major from Mandeville, and Clint
Lovell, right, a junior mathematics major from Slidell, were winners in
a recent student mathematics paper competition sponsored by the Louisiana-Mississippi
section of the Mathematics Association of America. The students wrote and
submitted original mathematics papers then gave a presentation at the Louisiana-Mississippi
MAA meeting, hosted by Southeastern. Elbers received first place for his
“A Distinct Relationship Between a Cubic and Its Tangent Lines.” Lovell’s
“A General Characterization of n x n Pythagorean Matrix Triples” was chosen
for third place. The students were supervised by Southeastern mathematics
professor Tilak deAlwis. A third student, Tim Tassin (not shown), also
participated in the competition under the supervision of mathematics professor
Ken Li. |
