HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University will celebrate Martin Luther King Day with a candlelight processional and program on Wednesday, Jan. 21. The annual event is sponsored by the Kappa Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.
The processional will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the University Center, said Alpha Phi Alpha advisor Ronald Valentine, transition advisor for Southeastern’s Student Support Services. He said participants will walk through the University Avenue tunnel to Lee Hall and then to the War Memorial Student Union Ballroom, where the program will begin at 7 p.m.
Guest speaker Glenda Coburt, an East Baton Rouge Parish educator, will talk about the late civil rights leader’s life and legacy. The program will also include poetry, biographical information about King and a performance by the Southeastern Gospel Choir. At the conclusion, the fraternity will continue its tradition of laying a wreath at the tree planted in King’s memory in the Student Union Park.
