HAMMOND -- Southeastern Louisiana University's public radio station, 90.9 KSLU, will host a three-day on-air fund drive, March 11-13.
Licensed to Southeastern, KSLU is the region's only public radio station and one of only eight public radio stations statewide. In addition to airing programming from Public Radio International such as "A Prairie Home Companion" and "World Café and Marketplace," KSLU also features local news and interviews with radio veteran Mary Pirosko, "Point of View" with local personality Rosa Dunn, and an eclectic blend of music including blues, adult alternative and college rock.
"Our previous fund drives raised approximately $6,000 each year, which allowed us to bring our listeners ‘A Prairie Home Companion,' which aired for the first time on KSLU during last year's fund drive," said general manager Wayne Cain "With federal cutbacks in funding for public broadcasting looming, support from our community is more important than ever. If you believe in non-commercial public radio, we ask you to show your support for KSLU by calling in your pledge during our Fund Drive, March 11-13."
Cain said the fund drive will have a new feature this year designed to benefit students. "We are instituting a KSLU scholarship which will be awarded each semester to a communication major who is a current or previous student employee of KSLU," Cain said. "The Annual Fund Drive will help fund scholarship by including a ‘Add a Dollar for a Scholar' as a donation option."
Southeastern President Randy Moffett heads the list of local celebrities and members of the community and campus who will again participate in the fund drive. He will be joined by Hammond Chamber of Commerce executive director Kathy Stuart, Southeastern alumni and award winning broadcasters Rod Starns and Steve Bellas, and many more guests, Cain said.
