SLU HOMECOMING: PARADE CANCELED, BUT MANY EVENTS STILL ON
HAMMOND – Rain is not dampening Southeastern
Louisiana University’s Homecoming spirit.
Despite dreary weather predictions for Homecoming
Day – Saturday, Oct. 9 – many of planned festivities will still go on –
they will just take cover in Twelve Oaks dining hall or the War Memorial
Student Union, said Alumni Association director Kathy Pittman.
However, some activities which cannot
move indoors have been canceled or postponed. The 2 p.m. Homecoming parade
has been called off as well as the marketplace shopping. The marker dedication
for Hammond Hall, scheduled for 4:15 p.m., is moving to Oct. 30 in conjunction
with the Southeastern-Alcorn State football game.
The variety of reunions and Alumni
Association “inside tailgating,” all scheduled for Twelve Oaks, are still
on for Saturday, Pittman said. Tailgaters who want to gather before the
6 p.m. Southeastern vs. Northern Colorado football game in Strawberry Stadium
can either reserve space at Twelve Oaks for $10 by calling the Alumni Association
at 985-549-2150 or they can transport their pre-game parties to the Student
Union, Pittman said.
“We’ll have tables and chairs set up
in the union and we want all our alumni, friends, neighbors, and visitors
to come on out, participate in tailgating and have fun,” she said. Tailgaters
are asked not to bring grills or fryers for use under the union mall.
The Student Union will house plenty
of games for children and families, Pittman said, including megaphone painting,
a “roaring” contest, face painting, and music. Televisions will also be
set up and the Alumni Association will give away pom-poms, t-shirts, and
other prizes.
