Science and the Arts students Michael Simoneaux and Nati Hardi were among
the students who took first place in the 23rd annual Southeastern Louisiana
University Foreign Language Festival on April 7.
SOUTHEASTERN HOSTS ANNUAL FOREIGN
LANGUAGE FESTIVAL
HAMMOND -- The 23rd annual
Foreign Language Festival at Southeastern Louisiana University awarded
its top honors to Baton Rouge Magnet High School and John Ehret High School.
The festival, held Tuesday,
April 7, at the University Center, drew 20 schools from surrounding parishes
to participate in Spanish and French poetry, prose, and extemporaneous
speaking categories and as groups in music and plays.
Baton Rouge Magnet High
School was the winner in the division for magnet schools and schools with
more than 600 students, while John Ehret garnered the highest award for
schools with less than 600 students. Baton Rouge Magnet also received the
highest overall honors in Spanish and French.
Michael Simoneaux of the
Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts was awarded a scholarship
by the French Community of Belgium. The all-expenses-paid scholarship will
allow her to attend a four-week summer immersion program at the Université
de Mons in Mons, Belgium this summer. Teresa O’Keefe of John Ehret High
School received a scholarship for a Caribbean cruise sponsored by Latin
American consulates in New Orleans.
Participating schools were
Archbishop Rummel High School, Hammond High School, Ponchatoula High School,
the St. Paul School, St. Charles Catholic High School, Live Oak High School,
Vanderbilt Catholic High School, St. Martin’s Episcopal High School, Archbishop
Chappelle High School, Brother Martin High School, the Louisiana School
for Math, Science and the Arts, De La Salle High School, Mount Carmel Academy,
Grace King High School, St. Scholastica Academy, Sumner High School, Springfield
High School, and Immaculata High School.
In the Spanish music category,
winners were Shannon Zorn of Archbishop Chappelle High School, first; Eduardo
Jimenez of Archbishop Rummel High School, second; and Julie Vargas of John
Ehret High School, third. The Spanish play or drama winners were
St. Scholastica Academy, first; Hammond High School, second; and Mount
Carmel Academy, third.
In French music,
Nati Hardin of the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts took
first place; Courtney Estepan, Michelle Bourgeois and Katie Christina of
Archbishop Chappelle High School were second; and third place went to Lauren
Classen and Avilene DePano of Mount Carmel Academy. John Ehret High School
placed first in French play or drama; Live Oak High School, second; and
Mount Carmel Academy, third.
