COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES DEAN’S AWARD – Albert Doucette, right, interim dean of Southeastern Louisiana University’s College of Arts and Sciences, congratulates chemistry/pre-pharmacy major Benjamin S. Stevens of Amite, the recipients of the 2003 Dean's Award, the college’s top honor. SLU COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES HONORS TOP STUDENTS
      HAMMOND – Chemistry/pre-pharmacy major Benjamin S. Stevens of Amite was the recipient of the 2003 Dean's Award, the top honor of Southeastern Louisiana University’s College of Arts and Sciences. 
      Stevens was among the students from the college’s 12 departments recognized at the annual Arts and Sciences honors convocation on May 1.
      At the 2 p.m. ceremony in Cate Teacher Education Center Kiva, Arts and Sciences also joined its sister colleges at Southeastern in recognizing an outstanding alumnus. Gerald Berggren Jr., a 1969 Southeastern graduate in biology education, received the College of Arts and Sciences alumni honor. He went on to earn master’s and doctoral degrees from Louisiana State University and is now head of the department of Plant Pathology and Crop Physiology at LSU and resident director of the Central Research Station. Berggren has won several awards for excellence in classroom teaching and graduate advising and is a noted researcher on topics such as soybean diseases and fungicides.
      The college also recognized inductees of the honor societies Phi Kappa Phi and the Thirteen Club, as well as Dean’s List honor roll students.
      Departmental award and scholarship recipients were:
      HAMMOND – Luke P. Woodside, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Physics; Benjamin Brofman, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Spanish; John Michael Seals, Outstanding Senior in General Studies.
      PONCHATOULA – Albert J. “Snapper” Poche Jr., Outstanding Graduating Senior in Biology.
      TICKFAW – Jason D. Eleser, Kenneth E. Dyson Award (Biological Sciences).
      LORANGER – Anthony Haase, Kenneth E. Dyson Award (Biological Sciences); Jennifer Lombardo, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Communication.
      BATON ROUGE – Elijah M. Poulos, Kenneth E. Dyson Award (Biological Sciences); Nicole LeBlanc, James Wilox Award (outstanding senior in music).
      LIVINGSTON – Dominic J. Dubois, Outstanding Freshman in Mathematics.
      ALBANY – Loretta George, Dr. Robert Carl Brown Endowed Scholarship (Mathematics)
      FRENCH SETTLEMENT – Matthew Milton, Mark Dugopolski Sophomore Award (Mathematics)      
      DENHAM SPRINGS –
Ronald Aaron Palmer, Excellence in Liberal Arts Studies.
      ZACHARY – Joshua Smith, Harold Leu Award in Political Science.
      BOGALUSA – Janette Meyers, Excellence in English.
      FOLSOM – David Armand, D Vickers Award for Creative Writing.
      COVINGTON – Janis Caserta, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Psychology.
      SLIDELL – Silaine Marie Warn-Varnas, Outstanding Graduating Senior in French.
      MANDEVILLE – Leah Standley, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Visual Arts.
      LAPLACE – Brian E. O’Reilly, Martina Buck Award in History.
      KENNER – Courtney E. Chedotal, Outstanding Graduating Senior in Mathematics.
