SOUTHEASTERN COLLEGE OF ARTS
AND SCIENCES HONORS TOP STUDENTS
HAMMOND – Sandy Blanchard,
a music major from Hammond, was the recipient of the 2005 Dean's Award,
the top honor of Southeastern Louisiana University=s College of Arts and
Sciences.
Blanchard was among the students from 11 of the college’s departments
recognized at the annual Arts and Sciences honors convocation on April
25.
Blanchard has a 4.0 grade
point average and studies piano and violin. She teaches at the Hammond
Montessori School and at Southeastern’s Community Music School, where she
was herself a student before enrolling at Southeastern.
Arts and Sciences also
joined its sister colleges at Southeastern in recognizing an outstanding
alumnus. Leon Anderson, who received his master’s degree at Southeastern
in 1996, is director of jazz studies at Florida State University and an
internationally acclaimed percussionist. While at Southeastern, Anderson
studied with mentor Ellis Marsalis and Victor Goines of the New Orleans
jazz scene. Currently, he performs and tours nationally and internationally
with Marsalis, Goines, Walter Payton and the Snapbean Band, and the Third
Coast Jazz Quintet.
Also at the convocation,
the College of Arts and Sciences recognized inductees of the honor societies
Phi Kappa Phi and the Thirteen Club, as well as Dean’s List honor roll
students.
